Meet James Sullivan

Born and raised in the small town of Maplesville, Alabama, James Sullivan has found his second home in Birmingham—the historic heart of the civil rights movement. He proudly calls this city home, not just because of its legacy, but because of its people. His commitment to Birmingham shines through his service, including leadership as President of the Central City Neighborhood Association and as a dedicated board member for the Birmingham Public Library.

James holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, and a Master of Science in Management from Faulkner University in Montgomery. He is also a Certified Financial Education Instructor.

His community involvement is both deep and diverse. James has served as:

  • President of the Central City Neighborhood Association (downtown Birmingham)

  • President of the Birmingham Public Library Board of Trustees

  • Board Member for Birmingham Artwalk

  • Co-Chair of the Public Athletic, Cultural, and Entertainment (PACE) Facilities Board

  • Board Member of his Homeowners Association

He is proudly affiliated with The Birmingham Change Fund, 100 Black Men of Metro Birmingham, and the Associated Investors of Alabama, and James is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

When he’s not serving his community, James enjoys quality time with his wife Kayla, son Sire, and daughter Amilli. He also finds joy in networking, mentoring future business leaders, and expressing his creativity through drawing and painting.

Delivering Results. Building Momentum

Over the past four years, I’ve worked hard and stood in strong support of initiatives that are creating real, lasting change for our students and families. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together:

  • Safer bus routes for our scholars

  • A meaningful reduction in absenteeism through strengthened community partnerships

  • Facility upgrades throughout District 5 schools

  • Recipient of a groundbreaking electric school bus grant

  • Launch of the Better Choices for Success mentoring program

  • Creation of the Empower Institute—a first-of-its-kind program for ESL students

  • First student enrollment increase in Birmingham City Schools in over 30 years

  • Expanded participation in Career Day and Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs

  • First BCS sensory room at Hayes K8 through a partnership with Kulturecity

  • A historic investment in communications to amplify our district’s success stories

  • National recognition for tackling COVID-19 learning loss

  • And with my full support, Parker High School brought home its first-ever Class 6A State Championship

These wins reflect our shared commitment to progress, and we’re just getting started.

Looking ahead, I’m focused on continuing this momentum by:

  • Prioritizing excellent customer service for our parents, pupils, and partners.

  • Launching a state of the art entrepreneurship program to empower future innovators

  • Driving continued growth in academic achievement across all grade levels

Birmingham’s students deserve the best. And with your support, we’ll keep delivering it, together.
